Every GTA Protagonist Ranked: Where Do Jason & Lucia Fit?

From Claude Speed to Trevor Phillips, ranking every GTA protagonist. Plus where Jason and Lucia might land based on everything we know so far.

Grand Theft Auto has given us some of gaming's most memorable protagonists. From silent criminals to tortured immigrants, each GTA lead has brought something unique to the franchise. Here's our ranking of every mainline GTA protagonist β€” and where Jason and Lucia might fit.

The Complete Ranking

11. Claude (GTA III, 2001)

The silent protagonist who started the 3D era. Claude was revolutionary for his time, but the lack of voice acting and personality makes him the least developed GTA protagonist by modern standards. He was a vessel for the player rather than a character in his own right.

10. Victor Vance (Vice City Stories, 2006)

Victor was a decent protagonist with a sympathetic backstory β€” a soldier trying to provide for his family. However, his personality often felt overshadowed by the more colorful characters around him.

9. Toni Cipriani (Liberty City Stories, 2005)

A loyal Mafia soldier with ambitions. Toni was enjoyable but lacked the depth that later protagonists would bring. His story felt like a companion piece to GTA III rather than a standalone narrative.

8. Huang Lee (Chinatown Wars, 2009)

Often overlooked due to the game's platform (DS/PSP), Huang was actually a sharp, witty character navigating Liberty City's Triad underworld. His privileged background and fish-out-of-water situation created interesting dynamics.

7. Michael De Santa (GTA V, 2013)

A retired criminal in witness protection, Michael's midlife crisis provided GTA V with its most psychologically complex character. His strained family relationships and existential angst gave the game emotional weight, though some found his privilege made him less sympathetic.

6. Franklin Clinton (GTA V, 2013)

Franklin was the audience surrogate in GTA V β€” the ambitious young man looking for a way up. His arc from street-level hustler to major player was classic GTA, and his loyalty and pragmatism made him instantly likeable. Some felt his character was overshadowed by Michael and Trevor.

5. Trevor Phillips (GTA V, 2013)

The most unhinged protagonist in GTA history. Trevor was violent, unpredictable, and darkly hilarious. Steven Ogg's legendary performance made Trevor unforgettable. He forced players to confront the violence inherent in GTA's gameplay β€” you couldn't pretend Trevor was a good person.

4. Tommy Vercetti (Vice City, 2002)

Ray Liotta's iconic voice performance elevated Tommy from generic mobster to gaming legend. His rise from errand boy to Vice City kingpin remains one of the most satisfying power fantasies in gaming. Tommy's story proved that GTA could tell compelling character-driven narratives.

3. Carl "CJ" Johnson (San Andreas, 2004)

CJ's journey from returning son to criminal empire builder remains the most epic arc in GTA history. His connections to family, neighborhood, and community gave the story emotional stakes that transcended the criminal fantasy. CJ felt like a real person in extraordinary circumstances.

2. Niko Bellic (GTA IV, 2008)

The immigrant story that gave GTA its soul. Niko's war-scarred past, his disillusionment with the American Dream, and his capacity for both violence and genuine human connection made him the most emotionally complex GTA protagonist. GTA IV's narrative maturity was largely due to Niko's depth.

1. John Marston (Red Dead Redemption, 2010)

While technically not a GTA protagonist, Marston is a Rockstar character who set the standard for narrative depth. His story of a reformed outlaw trying to save his family remains Rockstar's finest character work. He's the benchmark against which all Rockstar protagonists are measured.

Where Will Jason & Lucia Land?

Based on everything we've seen, Jason and Lucia have the potential to rank among the very best. The dual-protagonist structure, romantic partnership, and apparent narrative depth suggest Rockstar is aiming for their most complex character work since RDR2. If the writing matches the ambition, they could challenge Niko and CJ for the top spots.
